The Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) announces the launch of “Prajjwala Challenge” for bringing about “Transformation of the Indian Rural Economy” with special focus on rural women belonging to the marginalised rural communities in India.

The Prajjwala Challenge seeks to expand interest and partnership, mobilise and harvest the power of experts, academia, practitioners, youth, start- ups, Community Based Organisations (CBOs), Self – Help Groups (SHGs) and their institutions like Village Level Organisations (VOs) / Primary Level Federations (PLFs), Block Level Federations (BLFs), Cluster Level Federations (CLFs), Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), Producer Groups (PGs), Producer Enterprises (PEs), Producer Companies, Cooperative Societies etc. to bring new and innovative ideas to transform the rural economy.

This is a first of its kind nationwide initiative to provide thoughtful minds a platform to present new, innovative and scalable pathways for rural economic transformation in India.

The Goal is to support 5 Innovative Ideas / Models to bring about Transformation of the Rural Economy in India

Broad Contours for the Ideas

The “Prajjwala Challenge” invites innovative ideas on “Transformation of the Rural Economy”. The participants will be encouraged to make their submissions within the broad contours of the following strategic framework. Participants are encouraged to think clearly on these aspects, and articulate the elements of their model within the framework.

Focus on Women and the Marginalised

The idea/model must ensure participation of rural Indian women belonging to marginalised rural communities and how their lives and livelihoods will be positively impacted by bringing about transformation in the rural economy through the proposed idea / model

Localised Models

The ideas should demonstrate “localized models” by linking the rural production systems and embedding the rural producers, entrepreneurs and enterprises in the value chain and mobilizing the entrepreneurial energy from within the rural areas towards increasing enterprises, place -based employment, jobs and livelihoods for the rural women and their families.

Sustainability

Sustainability of interventions rests on the ability of the models to effectively operate and maintain the assets created during the process of implementation. These interventions need to generate enough resources to develop a circular flow of income impacting community-level gains. A symbiotic partnership between the Government- Community- Private Enterprises will be key to sustainability.

Multi Sectoral

The ideas may include a wide-range of locally relevant businesses – spreading across secondary and tertiary / service sectors

Cost Effective

A cost-effective model is critical for sustainability. A model that needs minimal investments will be considered for replication and scale-up.
